This site is the official website of the Royal House of Newland (Kingdom of Newland). It provides information about the Ancient Dynastic Royal House of Newland; the history of its origin and its sovereignty, news, and information regarding the Order of the Unicorn.

A message from Lord Newland

The well renowned phrase; 'History is written by the victors' certainly holds resonance in our case. For the last 657 years the Royal House of Newland has remained in a state of quarantine to live in obscurity and have hence therefore slipped through the historical record. Though the House of Newland may be considered a lost Royal Family, it must be noted that we were not and are not exiled. We therefore remain as legitimate Sovereign Royalty of Scotland. However, we make no claim to the throne of Scotland or indeed any other territory, but claim our own independent sovereignty that was authorized by Pope Innocent VI in 1362 and legitimized by deed of Letters Patent in 1367 by King Edward III of England. We therefore live in the UK as a sovereign entity free of British Jurisdiction (de Jure). We are what is deemed as Free Royalty completely separate to the British aristocratical system, i.e. The House of Lords, the establishment, its officers, and the reigning House of Windsor, and as such just like all other foreign royalty the House of Newland is not included in the British Peerage or funded by the British Tax payer. With no aid or Sovereign Grant we exist as an impoverished state relying on our own ingenuity and the grace of God to survive. Sovereignty is not created by monetary wealth nor destroyed by the lack of it, likewise Sovereignty is neither created by recognition nor destroyed by non recognition, and therefore as Sovereign I retain the personal dynastic wealth of lineage, the jus majestatis, i.e. the right of respect and honors due to my rank; and the jus honorum, i.e. the right to grant noble titles and ranks of knightly orders. My inherent birthright as Sovereign has been legally and historically affirmed by the unlocking of my Heraldic Instrument of Creation Letters Patent, which was thus verified and confirmed bona fide legal and genuine by Her Majesty's Lancaster Herald in person at the College of Arms in 1986. However, the House of Newland remains the casualty of historic injustice, wrongfully excluded from the pages of the British Peerage. It is therefore our moral obligation to inspire historians to acknowledge and tell the full story. Of course historic errors cannot be corrected overnight but adjustments in the pursuit of historic truth and accuracy should be made. Therefore, we propose that the statement stating John, the Master of Sutherland in 1361, 'Died of the Plague', should have the additional following footnote. 'However, it is now established that he survived; changed his name to William Newland, and it is from him that the Sovereign Lords of the Royal House of Newland (the Sovereign Lords of Scotland) are descended'. Until then we endeavor to persevere with our quest to have the truth told and to set the record straight, which this website aims to do.
