Welcome to our photo album which shows a small selection of family photos from the Royal House of Newland archive. For the captions we have decided to use the titles which were held by the family members at the time when the pictures were taken as it was only when King Ernest I ascended to the Sovereign Lordship, upon the Abdication of his brother King Albert I in 1936/7, that Ernest's children were raised in status. We have also for the these captions decided to style in keeping with contemporary British royal practice of using the title Prince and Princess in place of our traditional standard Lord and Lady. For more about understanding our use of titles see our Dynastic Rules page under the title heading Titles and Styles of the Dynasty. We hope you find our photos interesting and that you enjoy looking at them as much as we do.

OTHER FAMILY

SYBIL PETTITT
This charming old portrait is of Lord Robert Newland's Great Aunt, Sybil Pettitt. Sybil Pettit was born in Brandon Suffolk on 25th February 1907. She was the daughter of William Pettitt and Emma Jane (nee Spalding). Sybil's dance career started early and by age 14 she was already performing regularly on stage. She was coached by Mrs Edith Adcock and soon gained work in the London theaters as a professional nude and chorus girl. Her natural good looks, charm and beautiful figure made her a favorite among her many admirers.
During the 1920's and 1930's nudes were a glamourous new introduction to British theaters inspired by the Folies Bergère and Moulin Rouge in Paris, yet the stage censorship laws of the time forbid nude performers to move on stage. So to get past this barrier the nude performers would typically assemble onstage with the curtain down (i.e. out of sight of the audience) and then strike poses before the curtain went up. The nude performers would then hold those poses, remaining perfectly still until the curtain came down again. Alternatively, during the performance the lights would be turned out and nudes would adopt different poses ready for when the lights were turned on again.
The world famous Windmill Theater in London opened in 1931 and it is thought Sybil may have danced there too. Sybil retired from the stage in 1942 when she married Widower Gerald H. Lambert who was a Bank Manager. Sybil died in 1990 age 83.
OLIVE MAUDE WHEELERMiss Olive Maude Wheeler was born on 11th August 1921 at Islington London; the natural daughter of Mrs Ivy Dora Wheeler (nee Newland, - the natural daughter of the Honourable Maud Newland). Olive was tragically killed in the Blitz on London during World War II.
The Casualties Lists records:
'WHEELER: Olive Maude, age 19; of Milner Square, Islington. Daughter of Ivy Wheeler, injured 20th September 1940, at Jack's Cafe, King's Cross; died same day at Royal Free Hospital'.
Olive was the 2nd Cousin to Lord Robert Newland's father Lord Raymond Newland.
