TITLES AND STYLES OF THE DYNASTY

LORDS AND LADIES

The word 'Lord' can be traced back to the Old English word 'hlāford' which originated from 'hlāfweard' meaning 'loaf-ward' or 'bread-keeper', reflecting the Germanic tribal custom of a chieftain providing food for his followers. The appellation 'Lord' is primarily applied to men, while for women the appellation 'Lady' is used. In the United Kingdom aristocracy system, Lord is a general title for a sovereign or prince or for a feudal superior (especially a feudal tenant who holds directly from the king, i.e. a baron, lord of the manor, etc). The appellation can also denote certain persons who hold a title of the peerage, i.e. Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, Baron, Lord of Parliament; or persons who are entitled to courtesy titles. Before the Hanoverian succession, before the use of 'prince' became settled practice in the United Kingdom, royal sons were usually styled Lord [Forename] or The Lord [Forename], and likewise royal daughters were styled 'Lady'. The Royal House of Newland origin being prior the Hanoverian succession hence continues to style the old way using Lord rather than Prince. Yet on occasions style in keeping with Royal British contemporary practice as King or Queen, Prince or Princess. For more information about British titles see the Order of the Unicorn page under the heading: 'More About Titles'.

SENIOR MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY

R011: In accordance with the customs of the Royal Dynasty, 'Sovereign Lord' is the official title of the Monarch/Chief/Head of the Sovereign House and Kingdom of Newland which is the equivalent in status to a 'Prince Regnant' within United Kingdom and King within its own entity: i.e: the Sovereign Lord is both a reigning prince and king and therefore he may style or be formally addressed as either. The wife of the Sovereign Lord is the Queen Consort but formally styles as Lady, i.e. Lady Newland. The children of the Sovereign Lord, though princes and princesses, instead typically style either Lord or Lady with their forename or full name but never their surname alone: i.e. Lord [Forename] or Lord [Forename] [Surname] and may add the optional post-nominal designation: [of the House of Newland]. The heir apparent (Crown Prince), may add the post-nominal distinction [The Master of Newland]. A female heir apparent (Crown Princess), or eldest female child of the Sovereign may add, [The Maid or Mistress of Newland]. The spouse of a male heir apparent styles as Lady. The spouse of a female heir apparent if they have no other title styles as an Esquire using the customary post-nominal letters: 'Esq'; hence the rank of Lord is not transferable to a male spouse not of the Dynasty. The wife of a Lord of the Dynasty who is not in direct line of succession, styles as Lady. The husband of a Lady of the Dynasty, if they have no other title, may style as an Esquire using the customary post-nominal letters: 'Esq'.  Children of the heir apparent and heirs in direct line of succession style with Lord or Lady (as described above). The eldest son of the heir apparent may add the post-nominal designation: [The Master Royal]. The eldest daughter of an heir apparent may add the post-nominal designation: [The Maid or Mistress Royal].

JUNIOR MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY

R012: Children of a Lord of the Dynasty not in direct line of succession style as Honourable using the prefix: 'Hon' and may add the optional post-nominal designation: [of the House of Newland]. The spouse of an Honourable, if they have no other title, may style as an Esquire or Esquiress using the customary post-nominal letters: 'Esq'. Their children, if they have no other title, may style as a Gentleman or Gentlewoman using the post-nominal letters: 'Gent'. Children of a Lady of the Dynasty, if they have no other title may style as a Gentleman or Gentlewoman using the post-nominal letters: 'Gent'. The spouse of a Gentleman or Gentlewoman, if they have no other title, style as Mr or Mrs. Their children have no formal title. NOTE: When an heir presumptive is a junior member of the family: ie: not the son or daughter of a Sovereign Lord, he or she styles as Honourable Lord/Lady using the prefix: 'Hon-Lord' or 'Hon-Lady' and may add the optional post-nominal designation: [of the House of Newland]. The first child of an Honourable Lord/Lady, if he or she has no other title may style as an Esquire or Esquiress using the customary post-nominal letters: 'Esq'.

THE ROYAL QUALIFICATION: H.R.H.

R013: All Royal Family members who style as Lord or Lady (Prince or Princess), according to the current practice, can be ascribed the qualification 'His or Her Royal Highness', used as the abbreviated prefix H.R.H. The right of the qualification is given to members of the family by the decision of the Head and according to Royal procedures, based on their birthright or the will of the Head of the Royal Family.  A Lord or Lady of the House of Newland may also adopt the unofficial anonymous style Mr, Mrs, Miss, Master or Esq.

NOTE: The Newland Sovereign Lordship is a regality which closely adheres to Scottish practices of inheritance and therefore like many other Scottish hereditary titles created before 1707, the title can be inherited by a female heir in the absence of a male heir, but only on condition that she retains the surname Newland, thus keeping the title and name together to be inherited by the heir apparent or heir presumptive when she dies. She would style as 'Lady Newland the Sovereign Lady of Scotland' or 'Lady Newland Regnant'. The heir apparent is the person who will definitely inherit the 'Newland Sovereign Lordship' when the current Sovereign Lord dies. No one else could possibly have a better claim. The heir presumptive is the person who will inherit the title only if a child with a better claim is not born in the meantime.
